5 Traditional and Famous Manipuri Foods

Food is one of the greatest pleasures we have as human beings, and Manipur has some very famous food specialities which you can enjoy when you visit or live in the state of Manipur. 1) Chak-hao Kheer is one of the Most Famous Manipuri Foods

Chak-hao kheer is traditional and famous Manipuri food made of thick rice porridge, boiled in water and served with different flavors. There are more than a hundred different varieties of Chak-hao kheer, and each type is named after its creator. The creator is chak-hao, which means ‘elder sister’. The whole process takes up to three days, and only then can it be served to patrons as an exquisite delicacy.

2)Singju – Manipuri Salad

Singju is a salad made of raw vegetables, cooked vegetables, dried prawns, and chickpeas. The dressing consists of mustard oil, salt, red chilli powder and lime juice. Pyaaz Singju or Cabbage Singju is a very famous Manipuri food in all festivals because it is healthy and tasty at the same time.

3)Nga-Thongba

This is perhaps one of Manipur’s most well-known foods. Nga-Thongba translates to Naga Dried Meat, and it usually takes on a dry texture when done right. To prepare it, coat all sides of a flat piece of pork with spices and salt, then stick it in between two pieces of bamboo (separated by paper or leaves) and place it near a fire until it’s cooked through!

4)morok metpa (a chilli paste)

Morok metpa is made from a red chilli paste that has been roasted. It’s fiery hot, but it can add a lot of flavour to a dish when used in small quantities. Please keep it on hand for adding to chicken dishes or even stir-fries.

5) Athongba

Athongba is a famous Manipuri food, and it is also one of their most popular street foods. It can be eaten on its own or as an accompaniment to a meal. When served on its own, Athongba is often accompanied by humour (pickled bamboo shoots) and thounaojam (fermented soya beans). If you have athongba for breakfast, it will sustain you throughout your day.
