Drone Attack in Abu Dhabi | 2 Indians Murdered.

On Monday [17 th January 2022], two Indians and a Pakistani were murdered in a suspected Houthi drone attack in Abu Dhabi, UAE. “Small flying objects” prompted an explosion in three petroleum tanks near the Abu Dhabi airport, trapping the victims in a fire.

Yemen’s Houthi rebel forces have claimed responsibility for the heinous attack without other information.

Who are the Houthi rebels?

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi founded the Houthi Movement, and as of 2017, it is headed by Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. It has been called the best organized political movement in Yemen and was described as one of the most powerful political movements during strife between different factions within Yemen. It is also sometimes spelled as Huthi or Huthayni. They have fought against government forces in over 400 battles, which resulted in almost 3,000 deaths on both sides since 2004.

What is happening right now?

Houthi Rebels have taken control of cities in Yemen. In response to Houthi rebel attacks and instability across the Middle East and Northern Africa, many governments have started to invest more money into defense contractors and advanced drone technology. As a result, security across these areas has increased significantly. The prime example would be Abu Dhabi airport which recently invested millions of dollars into UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) or drones for its airport defenses.

Why is this happening?

The Houthi rebels have been fighting against Saudi-backed government forces since 2015. This is part of a more significant conflict that has been going on since 2004 when local Houthi leaders refused to recognize President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s plan to transfer power to his son. The resulting power struggle left thousands dead and large swaths of northern Yemen under rebel control. In recent years, however, things have escalated.
