All living things owe their existence to the Earth. Earth offers all of the natural resources that a tree, animal, or human requires to live. However, over time, all of the vital natural resources are being exploited to the point that they will be exhausted. It will be difficult for people to survive on Earth in such a condition. It is necessary to conserve the natural resources in order to overcome this problem. Every year on April 22nd, ‘Earth Day’ is commemorated with the goal of raising public awareness about this issue.
Earth Day and its History
Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day is commemorated. Earth Day is observed in over 195 countries, including India. Earth Day was first observed in 1970.
Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States initiated the day as an environmental education initiative. A year before, in 1969, an oil leak in Santa Barbara, California, had resulted in catastrophe. Many people were injured in the accident, and many of them resolved to work to safeguard the environment. Following that, on April 22, at Nelson’s request, around 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day event.
Earth Day Theme
From the year 1970, Earth Day has been observed every year. Every year, on Earth Day, a unique topic is chosen. Climate Action was the subject of Earth Day 2020. ‘Invest in our Planet’ is the theme for Earth Day 2022.
Lessons we should Learn
India is the world’s third-largest electricity consumer, and our reliance on non-renewable energy sources like coal, oil, and natural gas is pervasive. The nature of the environment has altered as a result of rising energy consumption, and environmental assets have become scarce. Needless to say, fossil fuels such as coal will be depleted one by one, and the world’s reliance on them has wreaked havoc on the ecosystem. Electricity, on the other hand, can be generated using environmentally friendly methods such as solar energy.
