The festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second day of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month. Bhai Dooj comes twice a year, one after Holi and the other after Deepawali. Celebrated two days after Holi, this Bhai Dooj is known as Holi Bhai Dooj. Even on Holi Bhai Dooj, sisters keep a fast to protect their brother from all the troubles and for his longevity and break the fast after tilak.
Holi Bhai Dooj Tilak and Worship Method


On the day of Holi Bhai Dooj, after bathing in the morning, brothers and sisters should wear clean clothes and worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesha. After this, decorate the plate of worship by placing kumkum, vermilion, akshat, sandalwood, fruits, flowers, sweets, black gram, betel nut or dry balls to perform the tilak tradition. Sisters make a brother sit on the chair and do his tilak in the auspicious time. After this, give all the things like paan, betel nut, gola, batashe, fruits, flowers, sweets and gram etc. to the brother. Brothers should also give the gift of strength to sisters as well as promise to protect them.
Story of Holi Bhai Dooj
According to the stories narrated in Indian folklore, there was an old lady who had a son and a daughter. The daughter was married and lived in a foreign country. One day the son requested from his mother that he wanted to visit his sister. On this his mother gave him permission. While reaching his sister’s house, he had to go through many troubles, but he reached his sister’s house safely .
There the sister saw her brother ‘s sadness and asked him the reason. Brother told her everything. On this the sister promised to leave the brother at his house safely and set out on the way with him. She saved her brother’s life while facing all the troubles that came in her way. On the occasion of Bhai Dooj, all the sisters break their fast by listening to this story and doing tilak of their brother.
