West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar may be relieved of his duties as Chancellor of State Universities in the near future. The Bengal Assembly has adopted a measure to nominate Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the Chancellor of State Aided Universities today, Monday. Following the Bengal Assembly’s decision, the simmering feud between Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Mamta Banerjee has intensified. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar now needs to decide whether or not to sign the law.

The West Bengal administration is preparing to change the law to eliminate Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar’s status as a ‘guest’ or ‘visitor’ at the state’s private institutions. According to a senior government official, the government intends to designate a state education minister to the position.

The Never ending tussle between Governor and Chief Minister
In Bengal, the feud between CM Mamta and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar is not new. In a number of areas, there is friction between the two. Mamta accuses the Governor of enforcing the Center’s commands directly. At the same time, the governor claims that everything he does is in accordance with the law. Political disagreements emerge on practically every issue in Bengal, whether it is convening a session of the Legislative Assembly or delivering the oath to a new MLA. The CM and the Governor also had a disagreement about the post-election violence in the state.
