Telangana Formation Day 2023: Celebrating the Birth of India’s 29th State

Introduction

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao commenced the state formation day celebrations on June 2, 2023, with a grand ceremony at the newly-established state secretariat. The event witnessed the hoisting of the national flag and a heartfelt tribute to the Telangana martyrs, as the chief minister took the salute from police contingents.

With an enthusiastic gathering of approximately 15,000 individuals, the ceremony served as the opening ceremony for the 21-day festivities across the state. The decennial celebrations aim to highlight the remarkable progress made by Telangana in various sectors over the past nine years.

Telangana, as India’s 29th state, came into existence on June 2, 2014, following a mass agitation led by K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR). The formation was a result of KCR’s leadership and the establishment of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, fulfilling the longstanding demand for separate statehood.

State ministers and district collectors led the celebrations in all 33 districts, showcasing unity and pride. They unfurled the national flag and witnessed the police parades, emphasizing the rapid strides achieved by the state in a short span of time.

Prior to the official ceremony, CM KCR paid respects to the Telangana martyrs at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Gun Park, near the state Assembly. Distinguished individuals, including ministers, legislators, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, Director General of Police (DGP) Anjani Kumar, and other senior officials, also honored the brave heroes.

In addition to the state secretariat, the formation day celebrations took place at Raj Bhavan, where Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan unfurled the national flag, underscoring the significance of the occasion. Notably, the Government of India organized Telangana formation day for the first time, with Union Minister for Culture and Tourism G. Kishan Reddy hoisting the flag at the historic Golconda Fort.

The Telangana Legislative Assembly and Council actively participated in the festivities. Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy hoisted the national flag at the Assembly, while Council Chairman G. Sukhender Reddy unfurled it at the Council premises. The Telangana High Court, led by Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, celebrated the formation day by proudly hoisting the flag, signifying justice and freedom.

Telangana Formation Day holds immense significance for the state and its people. It commemorates the fulfillment of a longstanding demand for separate statehood and pays tribute to the courageous Telangana martyrs. This day also showcases the rapid progress and development achieved by Telangana in various sectors, reflecting the indomitable spirit and determination of its people.
