Another notable attraction of Sri Aurobindo Ashram is Auroville – a futuristic utopian city created by French architect Roger Anger. 3) Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple
Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple is a famous shrine located in Pondicherry. The temple was originally built by the Pallava dynasty, who ruled over Pondicherry between 9th and 13th century. The shrine is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and there are several myths and legends associated with it. It attracts thousands of devotees from all over India every year.
Auroville is a unique experiment founded by Mirra Alfassa, aka The Mother. Auroville focuses on creating a universal township based on human unity and international understanding. The town itself is located roughly 25km from Pondicherry, but visitors can participate in one of many community activities at no cost. A couple of kilometers from Pondicherry, Arikamedu was once one of India’s most important ports. Excavations have revealed that it was established around 100 BCE and became an important trading port by 500 CE. The site contains thousands of Roman coins and other artifacts. Visitors can also see remains from later eras, including a large statue of Vishnu dating back to 850 CE; ruins from Chola and Vijayanagara temples; and water wells dug by Muslim rulers after they occupied Pondicherry in 1761.
