Who Will be the next Test Captain of India

After seven years as captain of India’s Test team, Virat Kohli has decided to step aside. And this has raised a very important question in every Indian cricket fan’s mind. Who will be the next test captain of India?

Kohli captained India for 68 Test matches, winning 40 of them, making him the country’s most successful Test captain. He announced on Saturday, following India’s 1-2 loss in the Test series against South Africa. His post on retirement came as a surprise for the entire cricket community and fans who expressed anguish over it; with raising emotions, the crucial question that needs to be asked is who will carry forward Virat Kohli’s legacy? In this article, let’s discuss who could be the next test captain of India. Following are the top contenders for Test Captaincy.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, Captain of T20 and ODI cricket, is the frontrunner to become test captain of India. He has 3047 runs with the highest score of 212 in 43 test matches he has played. He, as an opener, has played a critical role across all formats with an excellent knock in crucial games. So Rohit ranks on the top, and Bcci is considering this option; his massive achievement in the IPL with five times trophy is another plus point for his selection.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul, Captain of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, is the second option to become the test captain of India. He has 2547 runs with the highest score of 199 against England. He is currently one of the fierce openers along with Rohit. Recently scored a ton against South Africa, so he is a second option to be captain, but many cricket experts are concerned that Rahul is still a young player and he didn’t develop the captaincy skill, so some say he should wait.

Pujara and Rahane – The way forward

Cheteshwar pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, two experienced players of Indian test cricket, are in a very tough situation to be retained in a team as both these players have lost their form and are failing in contributing runs to the team. Pujara scored a first-ball duck in the first match in the recently concluded South Africa series and could not be consistent in upcoming games. Similar is the case with former test captain Rahane. So these two players may get a second chance to prove their positions till then, Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari may take their place.
